INTRODUCTION:
A Disciple is a pupil. Jesus, when he was on earth choose twelve men to train, who were called the Disciples. For three years they walked and talked with Jesus. He taught them many truths in prepration for the job that He was intrusting them to accomplish.
It is my duty also, to find and make Disciples of men. The Great Commission found in Matthew is:
Matthew 28:19-20
"19. Go then and make disciples of the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20. Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you....."
Every part of this commission must be carried out to completion, if we are to fullfill the Lords command. It is absolutely necessary. When any part of this commission is left out it does great harm to the work of God. We must be obedient and be diligent to this task, no matter how much work it is, in order to do things in the order the Lord listed for us to do.
This is one of the primary reasons for the Local Church organization. We need the cooperative work of believers in the Church to accomplish this commission. [See Ephesians 4:11-16] God has set a five fold ministry in the body of Christ, to bring the church to maturity.
Perhaps one of the greatest commands in this commission, is to "TEACH THEM TO OBSERVE EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE COMMANDED YOU."
If we fail to do this, then we send out workers into the world that are not properly equiped to carry forth the Lord's calling in their lives. This is true of every believer. All must be trained and taught because all are servents of the Lord, regardless of their gifting.
If new Christians are not taught the foundations of their faith, and are left to learn on their own by trial and error, then we have greatly hindered their walk. When we properly teach them and make sure that each one is given help to understand the basic foundational truths needed to live victoriously and powerfully, producing fruit, then we assure the continuation of the Christian faith.
In todays Church in so many cases, teaching of the Word of God has fallen through the cracks. Many have not helped new Christians through teaching. No matter what you call this program, Sunday School, Bible Study, or Dicipleship Training, we must implement this in our Churches. Because of this we see weak sickly Christians. They are stunted in their growth, having not reached maturity. The Apostle Paul said that many were still living like babe's and sucking on bottles, when they ought to be eating meat. He challenged all to go on into perfection:
"11. Concerning this we have much to say which is hard to explain, since you have become dull in your [spiritual] hearing and sluggish [even slothful in achieving spiritual insight]. 12. For even though by this time you ought to be teaching others, you actually need someone to teach you over again the very FIRST PRINCIPLES OF GOD'S WORD. You have come to need milk, not solid food. 13. For everyone who continues to feed on milk is obviously inexperenced and unskilled in the doctrine of righteousness (or conformity to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action), for he is a mere infant [not able to talk yet]! 14. But solid food is for FULL-GROWN MEN, for those whose senses and mental faculties are trained by practice to discriminate and distinguish between what is morally good and noble and what is evil and contrary either to divine law.
Chapter 6:1 Therefore let us go on and get past THE ELEMENTARY STAGE in the teachings and doctrine of Christ (the Messiah), ADVANCING STEADILY TOWARD THE COMPLETNESS AND PERFECTION that belong to SPIRITUAL MATURITY. Let us not again be laying the foundation of repentance and abandonment of dead works (dead formalism) and of the faith [by which you turned] to God, 2. With teachings about purifying, the laying on of hands, the resurrection from the dead, and eternal judgment and punishment. [These are all matters of which you should have been fully aware long long ago.] 3. If indeed God permits, we will [now] proceed [to advanced teaching]. Hebrews 5:11-14 and 6:1-3
